How to Spot a Water Leak: 8 Signs & What to Do
Unexpected bills, damp walls, dropping boiler pressure… 8 clear signs your home has a hidden water leak.
Water leaks usually develop unseen and can cause serious damage by the time they're noticed. These 8 signs help you catch them early.
1. Your water bill jumped suddenly
If your usage hasn't changed but the bill doubled, there's almost certainly a leak. As a first check, close all taps and see if the meter still spins.
2. Meter spins while all taps are closed
If the meter slowly turns even with no water use, that's a classic hidden leak sign.
3. Damp, stains or mould on walls
Damp marks, especially in bottom corners, behind bathrooms or under kitchen counters, often indicate a leaking pipe behind the wall.
4. Boiler keeps asking for water
If boiler pressure drops on its own and you must keep topping up water, the heating circuit may be leaking — often under the floor, where a thermal camera is needed.
5. Warm/cold spots on the floor
If walking barefoot you feel certain spots warmer or colder than the rest, there could be a hot-water or heating pipe leaking beneath.
6. Drop in water pressure
Pressure dropping at all taps at once can indicate a leak on the main line or tank connection.
7. Constantly running taps or cisterns
Visible leaks waste a lot of water monthly and may hint at a bigger hidden problem.
8. Unexplained damp patches in the garden
If part of your garden stays wet without watering, an irrigation line or buried pipe may have burst.
